Equality or equity?

Inclusive Education is when a school educates children of all abilities and backgrounds. It means that children with additional learning needs and special educational requirements are educated within a ‘mainstream’ learning environment, rather than a specialist school. Sounds amazing, how else do we build an inclusive workplace or community right?

If we give everyone the same thing then it’s equal, right? What if we gave everyone what they needed to succeed, that would be equity. Equality and equity are not the same. The truth is that we do not all start from the same place. We don’t all need the same tools to be able to start or finish. So, why are we not seeing more inclusion in education? Why are neurodiverse kids excluded from accommodations needed to be able to fairly participate?

High schools marketing their success with bachelor’s entry This is the “target” for all our kids? Most kids will not be able to go to university, never mind those who are neurodiverse. Why are we still making use of an education system that was designed to train factory workers?

A great resource, The Autism Resource Suite includes the latest guidelines, resources and practical strategies for education professionals supporting autistic learners. I can guarantee you that neurodiversity will help us all see the world differently, a world with infinite possibilities. I look forward to engaging with you and building a stronger more inclusive ecosystem for all.
